Shoshana Johnson is the first Black female prisoner of war in America’s military history. On March 23, 2003, the former Army specialist was serving with the 507th Maintenance Company when her convoy took a wrong turn and was ambushed by Iraqi forces. Eleven soldiers were killed. Johnson suffered bullet wounds to both ankles and was captured along with 5 other soldiers. U.S. Special Forces rescued her and other POWs on April 13, 2003.
